Binaural beats for focus and deep sleep

Binaural beats – Do you have a regular meditation practice? If you do, than you know that meditation enhances mood and creativity, and helps you de-stress. Did you know that there’s music that has this same capacity? We call this music binaural beats.

What are binaural beats?
Binaural beats describes music that presents two slightly different tones to each ear, in a very rhythmic manner. This triggers the brain to create a third tone, named the binaural beat, which is essentially the difference between tone 1 and 2. This third tone is essentially an illusion that your brain creates to compensate for the differences between the tones to each ear. So if you would present a 14 hertz tone to the left, and a 14,5 hertz tone to the right ear, your brain would produce the illusionary tone of 0.5 hertz.
The frequency of this binaural beat can be mapped to a specific brain wave frequency. Brain waves vibrate at different frequencies that correlate to specific states of mind. When you’re in an alert, wakeful state you produce a different brain wave frequency than when you’re in a deeply calm and restful state, for example.

By stimulating certain types of brain wave frequencies you can then stimulate certain states of mind. The brain produces five different brain wave frequencies:

Delta – 0 – 4 hertz – deep sleep, healing and restoration
Theta – 4 – 8 hertz – meditation, deep relaxation, creativity, trance
Alpha – 8 – 14 hertz – increased learning and information absorbing, stress-reducing
Beta – 14 – 30 hertz – increased focus and clarity
Gamma – 30 – 100 hertz – highly alert, highly consciousness, heightened memory function

If you were to listen to binaural beats between 14-30 hertz, for example, you would stimulate a focussed and clear state of mind.

The 5 brainwave frequencies

Delta waves
Delta waves occur mainly during deep, dreamless sleep, or when you’re in a state of hypnosis. Inducing this brain waves state stimulates deep rest and restoration.

Theta waves
Theta waves occur predominantly in the phases just before waking and falling asleep. It’s also referred to as the daydream state. Dreams, inspiration and creativity are associated with this brain wave frequency. Inducing this brain wave state stimulates deep relaxation and meditation.

Alpha waves
The alpha brain wave state is defined as the state of relaxed concentration. It occurs when you’re in a state of deep focus and learning, a state of flow. Like when making music or studying. Inducing this state enhances learning and concentration.

Beta waves
Beta waves represent an alert, clear state of mind. They are observed during active thinking, problem solving, or engaged conversation. They allow you to stay focussed and on task; and activate those brain areas necessary for completing the task at hand.

Gamma waves
Gamma waves are really high frequency beta waves. They have been equated to peak mental states and heightened perception. But they’re also observed at times of severe stress or violence.

Inducing states of mind with binaural beats
The advantage of binaural beats is that you can listen to them anywhere, at any time. Their effects, however, are best experienced when you take your time and listen to them as you would practice meditation. This way, the beats can do their work at full effect.

We suggest you carve out a period of time to listen quietly, through headphones, and allow the beats to fully induce the state of mind you are aiming for. Reminder: Binaural beats present a different tone to each ear. It’s therefore essential that you listen to the music through headphones.
